Is mainstream jiu-jitsu a fantasy

I for one think it just might be unless there is a change. Lets look at the sport from the perspective of someone who doesn’t know the art it would look very silly to  a potential television producer who would’ve possibly be interested. With point stalling  and people waiting only till the last seconds of the fight to fight no one will be impressed by that.

With ebi, metamoris, and the goodfight tournaments there has been a slight glimpse of the pure form of jiu-jitsu thats about “the kill” diving and going after the submission from a business standpoint that’s something I can sell to a network. It Would be near impossible for me to sell a 6 year sandbag blue belt at a ibjjf tournament just laying across a opponent for a round after one guard pass. Im not saying abolish points all together but instead of awarding a takedown or guard pass let award submission attempts. Which promotes more action gives someone that doesn’t know the art something they can understand and gives a promoter something to sell to the mainstream. Just give it some thought

Is it a fight

Often times jiu-jitsu competitions, and mma are labeled as two different things most people only consider mma a fight and get offended if you call your grappling  match a fight now let’s  analyze the two mixed martial artist train hard, cut weight, and sharpen there skills in preparation  to defeat a opponent, now for the “jiu-jitsu guy” a Jujutsu-Ka (柔術家) train hard cut weight  and sharpen there skills in preparation to defeat a opponent sound familiar?  Also the same injuries are present in both sports so why is one a fight and the other isn’t i dont think the rules you choose to compete under makes it less or more of a fight if we did then where would it end do you say the boxer isn’t fighting  because  of the rules he chose to fight under can the military guy trump everyone because there’s no rules when they fight and its to the death in my opinion i think every combat sport should be respected thats is

Are you really a killer

On the mats the other day i was shown a video of this “killer ” at ibjjf tournament  the kid was good and all but through the highlights i didnt see any taps a few submission attempts but no taps i dont know about you but that doesn’t make a killer imagine a guy that showed up for work everyday and only did just enough to keep his job would that be a model employee i don’t think so and jiu-jitsu as a sport will never get where it needs to be with point riding and stalling and as a martial artist you wont be where you need to be when its time to defend yourself this is why the sub only format  of the goodfight, ebi, metamoris,u.s grappling  need to be supported cause the true killers….finish

Thanks and god bless

Fear

I wouldn’t  say ive been at this a long time four years to be exact and one thing has remained constant im always afraid when i get on the mat to compete  i always get asked “how do i deal with the nerves ” and in four years i never did deal with the nerves im still all jittery until i make contact with my opponent then the only thing that goes threw my mind is “just do what you do at the gym AND NO NEW STUFF DAVE!!!” Lol and the rish of relief after tapping your opponent its better than any drug out there so being totally relaxed when making the walk i dont think you can and that might be a good thing being afraid puts you on another level of alert that adrenaline is going full blast and the best thing i can tell you is to control it and aim it all at your opponent and dont let it consume you and send you running the other direction

Catch and release

We all have great training partners and they all play a roll in making us better.  you enjoy rolling with these guys but then there’s time when they dont wannna tap so what do you do? you break there arm right ? No i think you should just let go of that armbar or that leg or that foot and take the bad position rather than hurt this guy that just doesn’t wanna tap. You know he was caught in that heel hook and you know your set up worked and thats all you need. A choke is something a bit different there gonna tap or pass out he’ll  wake back up and thats the only time catch and release is  relaxed. From white belt on up we must preserve are training partners.

Compete

Competing is the best way to gauge  your skill alot of the time people get “gym good” and are fine with that and what i mean by gym good is you learn your teammates game thats not progressing just learning what ur partner is gonna do but people dont know the difference until you may get a visitor at the school whos game you dont know and he smokes you getting out there and competing against guys you dont know is the best way to practice and learn and just become better all around

Act like you been there

Many times in jiu-jitsu competition we see some ridiculous amounts of celebration and its usually over the smallest of accomplishment recently during worlds tim spriggs won a match against keenan cornelius now check the wording he “won” a match with keenan he didn’t beat keenan he was awarded two points for god knows what and won and celebrated as if he just won abu Dhabi now if you read my blog on points vs sub you already know what my idea of winning is and out pointing anyone especially getting two phantom points then not engaging is not winning and thats the world level even in the locals you’ll see someone hit a flying armbar (or triangle ) and once that happens cue the celebration and the “air jimmy ” nick name despite how they did in the rest of the tournament all im saying is its fine to celebrate just make sure the celebration matches the accomplishment and always act like you been there before…thanks for reading

Online training and belt promotion

Countless time practitioners spend on the mat rolling and drilling technique diving  for armbars and footlocks nowadays you can go online  to certain training sites and watch a video or two and receive a belt in bjj and this is the worst thing that could happen to jujitsu and even worst for the practitioners what you get is people that claim to know jiu-jitsu but that video will never give you the timing or physical condition you need to be the best fighter you can be i remember hearing about fighter’s having to drive hours to get to practice they weren’t looking for there belt in the mail and any true fighter wouldnt

Testing you’re self

Alot of us usually dont venture out of are belt rank in competition if we do its in the privacy of are academy far away from spectators eyes but every now and again we should step out of are comfort zone and challenge that next belt rank up especially when you’re being eyed for promotion facing that guy thats better and that you know for a fact is using his competition pace you can see the exact holes in your game and learn a new attack when he taps you last weekend i had the pleasure of competing against mix martial artist and Bellator fighter sidney “da gun” outlaw it was a honor to go 3 rounds with a athlete of that caliber and see the hole in my game and i should thank him for making me better and everyone i think should experience that
